In today’s job market, employees have the upper hand. With U.S. unemployment around 4 percent, the talent pool is contracting and fueling the competitive hiring landscape. Coupled with general feelings of under-appreciation, a large percentage of the workforce is exploring better opportunities. Top performers, especially, have the luxury of being selective.
In a recent article by Inc. Magazine, author Rhett Power shares three ways employers can retain their best employees as the war for talent plays out. Among the three strategies, Power sites “including employees in valuable, future-focused conversations” as key. He points to research compiled by Acertitude: 77 percent of employees feel most engaged when there is open communication, opportunities for input, and connections between current changes and the company's future.
Acertitude Founder Kevin O’Neill says this begins even before employees start—in candidate interviews. “We step back and look at not only where our client is, but also where they are going. We aim to match the trajectory of the candidate to the trajectory of the company, so the company won't outgrow the candidate and the candidate won't outgrow the company.”
